COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Federal government cuts by DOGE have reduced the USDA emergency food assistance program—key items like eggs, milk, chicken, and turkey will now be in 30% less supply for local food banks. One in eight neighbors faces food insecurity as rising costs force the Flint Hills Breadbasket to expand its space next month to help more families.  KSNT 27
  • Elwood Ott earned the first Dr. Melissa Peterson Native Advocacy Award for his work in suicide prevention, mental health, and support of Native American students — his efforts have built lasting ties within the community. He will be honored at the Powwow — Indigenous Cultures Festival on April 12 at the Lied Center.  The Lawrence Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • This spring the University of Kansas will host expanded Red Hot Research sessions as The Commons partners with KU research programs to feature six-minute talks by undergraduate and postbaccalaureate scholars. The first event runs from 3 to 5 p.m. on April 4th at Anschutz Library—followed by a second session from 3 to 4 p.m. on April 18th at Watson Library for discussion and networking.  University of Kansas
  • Charlie Johnson from Lawrence was named a James C. Gaither Junior Fellow by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, becoming the first KU student or graduate to receive the honor and will help research and write about the Middle East and North Africa—his one-year fellowship begins Sept. 2. This appointment marks a significant milestone for local academic achievement.  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawrence city commissioners on Tuesday supported staff proposals to address a $6.6 million deficit in the 2026 budget—plans that include proposed cuts, market-based pay, and efforts to restore about $2 million in the fund balance. Commissioners expressed caution on changes affecting public safety and recreation center fees—issues set for further review in upcoming budget meetings through September.  The Lawrence Times
  • The Kansas Department of Revenue said that March tax collections reached $636.9 million, falling $13.6 million short of expectations—2.1% below the estimate and 16.2% less than last March. A group including KDOR and university economists will meet on April 17th to review the fall numbers.  KSNT 27

HEALTH NEWS

  • Walker’s Wine Juice LLC is recalling its pumpkin juice sold in Kansas this week because tests showed the juice had a high pH that might allow botulism to develop — the recall covers several container sizes and customers are urged to contact the company for a refund. No illnesses have been reported yet and the product was distributed to multiple states.  KSNT 27
