CRIME NEWS

  • A judge found Lawrence man Owen Gage Walker (20) guilty of interfering with law enforcement after he pleaded no contest to giving false information during the police probe into the March 2023 shooting that killed 14-year-old Kamarjay Shaw; his plea deal gives him 12 months probation and his sentencing hearing is set for 4 p.m. May 1.  The Lawrence Times
  • A Kansas City woman was arrested on Thursday after leading Douglas County deputies on a chase through west Lawrence that began when a deputy tried to pull over her speeding gray Nissan Altima on U.S. Highway 59 and ended on eastbound Kansas Highway 10 when a tactical vehicle intervention forced her car to spin—she is booked on charges of felony fleeing, attempting to elude law enforcement, and aggravated assault on an officer while medics checked her and a passenger.  FOX 4
  • KU Police Department showed 481 criminal offenses on campus in 2024 — a drop of 6.4% from 514 offenses in 2023 and 13.6% below the ten-year average of 561 crimes. KU Police Chief Nelson Mosley credited the drop to more patrols and working with university partners—data was released on March 26.  University of Kansas
  • A 39-year-old Kansas City woman was arrested early Thursday after she led officers on a high-speed chase through west Lawrence—she drove recklessly, entered oncoming traffic, and was stopped by deputies using a tactical vehicle intervention and stop sticks before she was taken to jail on felony charges.  KMBC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four University of Kansas professors, Timothy Jackson, Ward Thompson, Jon Tunge & Michael Branicky were elected as AAAS fellows on March 27th for their research work, which brought KU's total active faculty fellows to 33 and recognized their contributions in chemistry & engineering.  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization is updating the Bike Plan and asks residents to share ideas to improve local cycling infrastructure. Community members can join an event at the East Lawrence Neighborhood Association Yart Sale on March 29—others will meet at sessions in April and an online survey is open until May 4.  City of Lawrence
  • The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas announced its free late spring events featuring talks by national leaders and student-led programs with key dates on April 1, 3, 16, 19, 24 and 30. The schedule includes a Dole Lecture, a conversation with former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, a new exhibit on Bob Dole and Dr. Hampar Kelikian — and the annual Easter Egg Roll with live music and family games.  University of Kansas
  • The Aviation Advisory Board will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2 in a hybrid format—staff and the public may join in person or via Zoom—and those who plan to give public comment must register in advance. For more information, contact the Airport Manager.  City of Lawrence
  • The Lawrence-Douglas County MPO will hold a Technical Advisory Committee meeting on April 1 at 2:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library in Meeting Room A (707 Vermont St) in a hybrid format where voting members will join virtually while other participants must register online to comment.  City of Lawrence
