COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local advocates from the ACLU of Kansas and Loud Light will explain new anti-trans bills and share community resources in a free event—Beyond the Bills: Understanding Anti-Trans Legislation and Community Resources in Kansas—on March 31 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. They will meet at the Lawrence Public Library—707 Vermont St.—as part of Trans Day of Visibility.  The Lawrence Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Lawrence Public Library announced Johann Hari as this year's Ross and Marianna Beach Author and said he will speak at Liberty Hall on June 11 at 7 p.m.—the bestselling author of Stolen Focus will share his ideas on how to pay better attention in a busy world.  The Lawrence Times
  • Douglas County’s Heritage Conservation Council launched a grant program to offer up to $10K for annual cultural events that honor our county’s heritage—$20K was allocated in the 2025 budget. Groups must apply by 5 p.m. April 11 and winners will be chosen on May 1.  The Lawrence Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The school district will add one preschool class each at Sunflower and Woodlawn elementary schools next year to provide more seats for children aged three and four. The district will also roll out enhancements—such as a focused elementary science curriculum, expanded STEAM modules at middle school, new Montessori classes at New York, and a Jayhawk Blueprint partnership—in the coming years.  The Lawrence Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Laura Kelly signed Senate Bill 8 on March 24, which now requires drivers to slow down or change lanes when passing stalled vehicles with flashing hazard lights — a move that extends protections from emergency vehicles to all roadway users.  KCTV
  • Residents could face higher costs to drive electric or hybrid trucks if a Kansas bill passes; the plan would nearly double fees for all EVs and set charges at $200 for fully electric trucks under 12,000 pounds—funds that lawmakers say will go to highway improvements—if approved, with changes taking effect in January 2026.  KCTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Johnson County Community College women's basketball team returned home as champions on Monday after a 75 to 67 win over the Pima Aztecs in the NJCAA Division II National Championship game in Joplin, Missouri. The team—led by longtime head coach Ben Conrad—won its third national title and ended the season at 34 to 1 with eight local players including Truman High graduate Layla Scott who scored 25 points.  KCTV
