Good morning, Lawrence. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 20th of March.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A $100,000 donation from a KU professor emeritus created the Bob and Lois Hanzlik Scholarship Fund at Peaslee Tech to support Douglas County residents in pursuing high-skilled careers — delivered through the Douglas County Community Foundation — and will help fill a gap in technical training. Peaslee Tech CEO Kevin Kelley said the fund offers a valuable alternative to college for those seeking skilled jobs — reinforcing local workforce efforts — as the program begins serving students.  The Lawrence Times
  • Kansas Education Commissioner Randy Watson urged school districts to cancel breaks or add days to make up for roughly eight lost days from winter weather, and he proposed half-day summer school for (K-3) students who need extra help in reading and math. He said using available state funds for extra lessons could help recover learning losses that began before the pandemic.  The Lawrence Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawrence city commissioners looked at survey results from over 1,000 tenants Tuesday that showed issues such as unsafe homes, rent hikes and fears of landlord retaliation. They agreed to explore a tenant bill of rights and a potential plan for tenant legal counsel—steps meant to balance power between renters and landlords.  The Lawrence Times
