ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Douglas County fire officials determined Friday that an ember from an unattended campfire started a 200-acre grassfire near North 1600 and East 400 Roads east of Stull which was contained Saturday with no injuries or damage — and they warn locals to stir ashes with water until campfires are cold as Monday’s and today's Red Flag warnings remind everyone of high fire danger. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ An art auction in Lawrence will support cultural programs at Haskell Indian Nations University after federal cuts affected university employees and will feature both live and silent bidding at the Regency Ballroom (200 McDonald Drive) at the Lawrence DoubleTree by Hilton. The auction is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 3 and artists can donate works on Saturday, April 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Lawrence Times
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Wildfires continue to burn across Kansas and Missouri as fire danger remains high this week. In Missouri, more than 40 wildfires are burning while Kansas has four wildfires, including a 1,500-acre fire east of Winfield and a 1,200-acre fire west of Dover—Kansas Forest Service is coordinating with the Great Plains Interstate Fire Compact and warns residents to avoid burning. - ➤ Some Lawrence neighborhoods are urging the City Commission to keep home occupancy limits at three instead of raising them to five—neighbors worry that higher limits could lead to more student rentals and less affordable long-term housing. The commission will decide the issue today at City Hall at 5:45 p.m. after reviewing over 20 public comments from local groups. The Lawrence Times
