COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lawrence Humane highlights 2-year-old Sparky, a pit bull/retriever mix who has been in foster care for two months and loves playing and cuddling. The shelter will run a Valentine’s adoption special this weekend (adoption fees drop to $30 for adult dogs 6 months and older).  The Lawrence Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four university professors (David Farber, Ruth Welti, Kathleen Lynne Lane and X. Long Zheng) will be honored with the Higuchi-KU Endowment Research Achievement Awards on April 14 at a ceremony, with each receiving $10,000 for their research excellence.  University of Kansas
  • KU's Big Event student organization won the Big Event of the Year award on Feb. 12 at the One Big Thanks Conference at the University of Florida, spotlighting its efforts to serve Lawrence neighborhoods. The group's service day is on April 18, with registration opening in late February (announcement).  University of Kansas
  • Researchers at KU and UCF received a 5-year, $3.5M grant from the U.S. Department of Education to expand the Center for Innovation, Design + Digital Learning and help educators adopt new tech safely. The center will enhance training for special education leaders and integrate emerging tools like AI.  University of Kansas
  • Last Feb. 10, the University Honors Program at Kansas recognized the 2026 cohort of 45 University Scholars and their faculty mentors at a reception with refreshments and remarks from the program director. The program supports talented sophomores with scholarships, mentorship, and interdisciplinary seminars (including a course on human origins).  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The 31st Kansas Transportation Safety Conference will be held April 21-22 at the Hilton Garden Inn Manhattan Conference Center, with a law enforcement workshop on April 20. Presenters will share roadway safety trends and strategies (sponsored by KU's Jayhawk Hospitality and a federal grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation).  University of Kansas
  • Lawrence is launching a randomized survey as part of its Solid Waste Master Plan to guide future trash and recycling decisions — a survey letter will be mailed to randomly selected residents in the coming days and must be returned within two weeks.  City of Lawrence
  • Lawrence Transit On Demand is updating its payment system with a $3 one-way fare starting March 1. Passengers should add a credit card through the app or by phone to keep booking their trips smoothly.  City of Lawrence

  • KU head coach Bill Self defended star freshman Darryn Peterson at a Thursday (Feb. 12) press conference, dismissing rumors about his health and noting the player's string of bad luck.  KCTV
  • After beating an undefeated Arizona team, the Kansas Jayhawks face No. 5 Iowa State at Hilton Coliseum (their third straight loss in Ames) as head coach Bill Self said the team will meet the challenge with determination.  KMBC
  • Paramount+ and Religion of Sports announced a four-part docuseries called Made For March that will follow the KU basketball team through the 2025-26 season. The series will air in April.  KCTV
