COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A majority of commissioners backed a plan for Lawrence Farmers Market to build a permanent pavilion in South Park (near Vermont and North Park Streets) during Tuesday’s meeting. The market, which began 49 years ago in parking lots, will create a steering committee to set funding and design details.  The Lawrence Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The KU School of Business will launch the Bicknell Certificate in Personal Finance this fall to prepare students for the CFP exam and financial planning careers. Marty and Cheryl Bicknell support the program (a $1.5 million gift) which includes CFP-aligned courses and hands-on experience.  University of Kansas
  • Katie Schultz, vice president at Black & Veatch and KU alum, will deliver the J.A. Tiberti Family Lecture at the KU School of Engineering's Beren Auditorium at 2:30 p.m. March 10, where her talk 'From Problem Solver to Impact Builder: The Engineer’s Leadership Journey' will show how leadership transforms engineering.  University of Kansas
  • Two KU debate teams earned automatic bids to the National Debate Tournament in Houston next month after finishing the season as top-16 teams nationally. The debaters will represent KU to continue a long tradition of success in this prestigious academic contest.  The Lawrence Times
  • A University of Kansas study finds many women in public service hide negative emotions for better job success; the research published Tuesday, Feb. 10, surveyed over 120 workers and shows that suppressing feelings may not fully lead to satisfaction (a sign that emotional labor is impacting work life).  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday, Feb. 16, the city will extend Ninth Street closure from Louisiana to Mississippi Streets to improve drainage as part of the Jayhawk Watershed Project; northbound and southbound traffic on Mississippi remain open and motorists should follow marked detours.  The Lawrence Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Caleb Furnell, a Lee's Summit West graduate from Kansas City, is set to compete as Team USA's brakeman in the Milano Cortina Olympics on Saturday, Feb. 21. He trained in Europe to shift from track to bobsledding (using his sprint and weightlifting skills) for the challenge.  KCTV
  • Rock Chalk Park is adding extra benefits beyond the soccer stadium to attract a World Cup team for upcoming matches. The park offers modern facilities & community spaces designed to support both local enthusiasm and international play.  KCTV
