CULTURE NEWS

  • Tom and Jann Rudkin donated $1 million to create a new accessible entrance from Jayhawk Boulevard to Dyche Hall at KU Natural History Museum, with extra funds set for partially restoring the cherished Panorama exhibit (expected construction begins in summer).  University of Kansas
  • Local author Jackie Gill joined Taylor Johnson on Jan. 20 to discuss the debut of her children’s book on wellness (designed to help young readers build healthy habits).  KCTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Kansas received the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification for its work with community partners in Lawrence. The Office of Community Impact is launching Engaged KU + a new toolkit, roundtables, and a micro-awards program this year to boost collaboration.  University of Kansas
  • University of Kansas School of Education and Human Sciences will host its Black History Month Celebration on Feb. 11 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at (150 Joseph R. Pearson Hall), featuring keynote speaker Aaron Smallwood; the event invites students, faculty, and community members to celebrate Black history and contributions.  University of Kansas
  • Candidates for the 2026 Lawrence Youth of the Year and Junior Youth of the Year will deliver speeches in a joint ceremony Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lied Center (1600 Stewart Drive), where judges will announce winners who will represent our community.  The Lawrence Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • KU researchers reported Tuesday that cleaner ship fuel regulations from 2020 cut sulfate emissions and reduced lightning stroke density by about 36% along shipping lanes in the Bay of Bengal & South China Sea, which may affect storm behavior. The study was published in Climate and Atmospheric Science.  University of Kansas

  • Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization is updating the Lawrence Bikes Plan to close gaps in the Loop as residents share input online until Feb. 3 or at an open house on Monday, Feb. 2 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Lawrence Public Library Auditorium (707 Vermont St.)  City of Lawrence
  • Lawrence city commissioners are finalizing short-term rental rules during the World Cup tournament to provide more flexibility for visitors & residents at local accommodations. The measure will streamline rental operations as excitement builds.  KCTV
