EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lawrence schools approved Courtney Ellis as the new principal at Sunset Hill Elementary, where she will start in July (replacing interim leader Howard Diacon) after serving as assistant principal and athletic director at Billy Mills Middle School. The district will soon offer families an opportunity to meet her. The Lawrence Times
- ➤ Alan Allgeier (deputy director for four years) has been named director of KU’s Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis, effective immediately. He will expand research and industry partnerships to promote cleaner, safer technologies in the region. University of Kansas
- ➤ KU alumnus David Pittaway’s $8M gift created the school’s first named deanship and two professorships (honoring his late parents), with Executive Dean Arash Mafi set to lead the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences after Monday’s announcement. University of Kansas
- ➤ Lawrence school board on Monday approved a $35,000 contract with RSP & Associates to develop a virtual locator tool that maps school assignments and provides a five-year enrollment analysis. - ➤ University of Kansas educators Glennda McKeithan and Ann Marshall released a new book that explains how using game strategies can boost student engagement in the classroom. - ➤ KU will launch a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition in fall 2026 that builds on its popular nutrition minor to prepare students for health careers. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The city reached 75% of its rec center membership goal with over 2,250 sign-ups, including nearly 1,000 seniors, as of Monday and raised nearly $30,000 from $5 spectator fees at athletic tournaments over two weekends. The Lawrence Times
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Lawrence father who saved a drowning child in 2022 is now battling cancer that spread to his spine (July 2025) and left him paralyzed from the chest down. His family set up a GoFundMe to help him get a wheelchair-accessible van so he can attend his son’s cross-country meets and go to the lake. KCTV
