EDUCATION NEWS

  • The KU Biodiversity Institute has named Victor Gonzalez Betancourt as the Charles D. Michener Assistant Professor and Assistant Curator in Bee Biodiversity and Evolution, starting in early January. He brings six years of university experience and will work with the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology on bee research.  University of Kansas
  • Donna Ginther (a KU professor) received the 2025 Carolyn Shaw Bell Award from the American Economic Association for advancing women in economics. She accepted the award at the Association meeting in Philadelphia on Monday, Jan. 5.  University of Kansas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Kansas Geological Survey published a report on Monday, Jan. 5 that examines natural gas chemistry in central and western areas and explains aging changes in gas composition to help guide future energy exploration. The analysis maps potential zones for additional natural gas and helium deposits.  University of Kansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A local workgroup sent a letter proposing a 3-point plan to boost affordable, accessible housing + ensure long-term affordability. The City Commission will discuss the new proposal Tuesday to address high cost burdens and rising homelessness in the community.  The Lawrence Times
